3 Idiots- review

A wise person once said, “School times end but memories last forever.” The movie, 3 Idiots, completely captured the essence of this quote, hilariously showcasing the wondrous and memorable journey of school and college years. Silly pranks, stubborn quarrels, camaraderie; this movie has it all, all the memorable incidents that make a student’s life. As I watched the movie, I realised, truly, how precious these years of student life are. We must cherish these moments as they soon pass us by. Each and every little memory we make along the way every day will build up and shape our lives forever. Make the most of it! For these are frankly the best years of our lives- the ones we will remember even when we are wiser and grey.

The movie, 3 Idiots, is packed with hilarious little moments that all students can relate to. Personally, my favourite ones out of the vast array are as follows. One day, the director of the college told the students that the fountain pen was a very important invention since regular ball point pens could not be used in space. A student raised his hand and cheekily  inquired why a pencil could not have been used instead? After that, when the director gave all the inquisitive students his welcome speech, one boy named Millimeter was able to lip sync alongside because he knew each word of the speech by heart! Turns out the director said the same thing each year. Later in the movie, the director of this institution realised that one night a student, Raju, was missing from his dorm. Determined to bust him, the next day while classes were going on he saw an extremely sleepy and dazed Raju. The director inquired where he was the previous night. Raju’s friends jumped to his rescue and answered that he had been studying which is why their friend was so tired. In retaliation the director asked Raju what an induction motor was. Raju replied by rolling his lips and saying an induction motor goes ‘brrrrrrrr’.

The director of the college who has been mentioned previously was an extremely unique character. He had curly, frizzy and grey-white hair like Einstein. He had a black moustache that he was very proud of. His behaviour was humorous because he had a mindset of never wasting time. Hence, in order to save time he wore a shirt that did not have buttons and instead had velcro. His tie was not tied, rather it had hooks to be hooked onto the shirt. He had trained his mind to enable him to write with both hands simultaneously. Every day at 2 pm he took a 7.5 minute power nap while listening to opera. While the director slept, his valet, Govind, was instructed to carry out unproductive tasks like shaving and cutting nails. Overall, the director, nicknamed Virus by students, was a very head strong person who had a raging temper.

There was a particular scene in the beginning of the movie that showed the college students' first day on their new campus. Out of respect to their seniors, in the middle of the cold night they were woken up and were made to remove their shorts, kneel down and say “Jahanpanh tusi great ho.” A witty student named Rancho did not want to obey the orders given to him. Hence, he quickly formulated a clever plan to get out of the tricky situation he was in. Suddenly, Rancho dashed into his dorm room and locked himself in. Out of frustration, the senior shouted at him and commanded him to come out in ten seconds, otherwise he threatened Rancho that he would pee on his door.  Thinking speedily, Rancho created a device within a matter of seconds. As promised, the senior peed on Rancho’s door once the ten seconds were up. But, to his shock, he felt an electric current the minute he peed on the door. This was all thanks to Rancho’s intelligently crafted device that was an electric conductor! I laughed heartily at this scene and will remember Rancho's brilliance.

Apart from hysterical pranks and amusing anecdotes, the movie 3 Idiots showed a crucial aspect of college life- friendship. Three batchmates Raju, Rancho and Farhan quickly formed a bond with each other that would last them for the rest of their lives. The three were inseparable in college times as well as later on. The first scene of this movie is a fitting example for the strength of their relationship as friends. The movie started off by showing a telephone call between Farhan and another batchmate who told him that he found Rancho, who had been missing for a couple of years. Thrilled, Farhan decided to get to Delhi and meet Rancho again, after a heart aching gap of many years. But, unfortunately he was in an aeroplane and was flying high in the air, towards another destination. Desperate, Farhan pretended to have a heart attack. He fell to the floor and clutched his heart. The air hostess rushed towards him and tried to wake him. In panic, the pilot landed the aeroplane back in Delhi so that needed medical care could be received. The fact that Farhan tried something so risky shows how much Rancho meant to him. Though they met for a brief few years in college, they formed an unbreakable connection.

Raju, Rancho and Farhan were great friends and had amazing times together. However, like all students they too had one frenemy, that one person who drove them up a wall. The person’s name was Chatur. Chatur was a south indian student who aspired to be at the top of the class, always. He believed that to be successful, one must mug up concepts and butter up people. To get the highest marks, he had many desperate tactics. One such method of his was placing distracting magazines on his classmates’ doors on the night before major exams. Another annoying habit of his was breaking wind and then blaming other people for it. How typical! One day to mess with him, the friends hatched a plan. Chatur was supposed to give the speech at an important event in which he would talk about their inspiring director. However, Chatur was not fluent in Hindi. So, to make his speech more impressive he made the librarian write it. Each and every word was the librarian’s and all Chatur did was mug the whole thing up!  Slyly, Rancho switched Chatur’s script with another one in which the words were replaced with humiliating ones. On the day of the event, Chatur said atrocious things about the director all because he did not know what was written in the speech.

In all, the movie 3 idiots is a hilarious movie that immediately brings back a pool of nostalgic memories of school and college years. After watching this movie, I cherish being a student much more because I have been reminded of all the little joys that are found in going to school. All the friends, secret hangout spots, inside jokes will be treasured reminiscences of ours when we are older. Even the parts that we do not enjoy right now like all the daily classes, will be looked back at with a happy outlook later on. Let’s enjoy our school years to the maximum ! We will never get them back but the experiences will stay with us, etched in our hearts, till our very last breath.

Notes from Underground

When someone asks me what my favourite genre is, I get lost within the intermingled thoughts weaving knots in my mind, pondering over the formation of an articulate term to convey the type of literary works that gnaw at my very soul. The only connecting thread is that all literary works centre around hyper-intellectual, eccentric characters, embarking upon quests fuelled by their idiosyncrasies, which are inexplicable and unfathomable for the common folk. The archetype for this literary niche is none other than the ‘Underground Man’, whose narrative voice Fyodor Dostoevsky writes from in ‘Notes from Underground’.  ‘Notes from Underground’, is a limited omniscient novella written by Fyodor Dostoevsky, centring around the narrative perspective of an anti-hero, with the moniker, the ‘Underground Man’, his true identity being anonymous. While the narrator never explicitly reveals his name, the lack of a proper name emphasizes his disconnect from personal identity and his self-imposed ...

About me

Dearest readers,  I’ve delved into countless fictional realms, plots and relationships. Yet, I’ve mostly steered clear from the most important tale of all, the tale of m life and how individual events accumulated together and finally culminated into the creation of this blog. Before i get not my entire life story, let me give you the basics. My name is Karissa, a Greek word which means love and grace. I am currently an 11th grader, studying the IBDP curriculum (lord save me). If i had to describe myself in just a few words I would say, confident, passionate and just the right amount of inane. As this is a blog, my introduction wouldn’t be complete without me talking about my favourite pieces of literature. If you haven’t been able to tell, The Secret History by Donna Tart is a novel that is so close to my heart that I have countless copies of it and i refuse to leave the house without a copy in my bag. “It is better to know one book intimately than a thousand superficially”, ...

Rebirth

Rebirth. rē-ˈbərth. Illusively, these seven letters cramped together don’t appear profound, cavernous or tortuous. But, after cogitating and glancing at them with a devout eye, sharply slicing through its intricately woven layers, the factitious and deceitful nature of this word is revealed, as its implicit connotations are brought to light . At first glance, the mind impetuously assimilates this word’s meaning to solely being confined to the literal definition, ‘a second birth’. However, in the words of Oscar Wilde, to define is to limit . By rigidly abiding to a sole elucidation, we are allowing our minds to be reigned by millions of invisible strings, tightly straining our expansive imagination and halting it from frenziedly running wild.  ‘Rebirth’ does not only refer to the continuous cycle of life, in which upon death, we are yet again cast back into the environment we have become accustomed to, yet now existing in a different mould. Rebirth also attests to the capricious and...
