Recently
conducted studies have concluded that veganism improves physical fitness, helps
in weight loss, reduces stress, balances hormones, improves skin, reduces body
odour and BMI. Yes, these benefits do make going vegan sound appealing.
However, we must not forget the cons!
The Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics has
given a warning saying that veganism can lead to serious nutritional
deficiencies. Taking greens as an example; they contain calcium. However, our
bodies can only use 5 percent of calcium in spinach compared to the 30 percent
in milk. The intake of iron, omega-3 fatty acids, vitamin D and vitamin B12
also raise concerns, especially the last one. B12 is hardly present in
plant-based foods. Which is why studies show that 60% of vegans are B12
deficient. This deficiency can lead to serious problems such as depression,
paranoia and memory loss.
On the
bright side, there are a few vegan friendly sources from which you can acquire
these nutrients. For example, you can acquire the much needed, B12 from foods
such as coconut milk, nutritional yeast, soy and cereal. If you balance your
diet you can get all these nutrients which are crucial for our bodies.
Speaking of balanced
and healthy diets, its time to break a myth. Many people believe that all vegan
foods are healthy. However, that’s not the case. Eating vegan doesn't
automatically mean you're eating well. Nutter Butters are vegan. Not to mention
unfrosted Pop Tarts. These foods are extremely unhealthy and lead to obesity.
To conclude,
veganism definitely has many health benefits. However, it is important to watch
your diet and consume plenty of healthy foods which contain essential nutrients.
If you keep this in mind; then you needn’t worry.
